3 word Method- the styling SECRET I found on TikTok

3 word method

this outfit encapsulates my style in a nut shell- sporty and oversized

Never underestimate the power of a good outfit on a bad day.

when I like my outfit- I walk taller, I have a certain strutt, and to be honest it plays a major effect on myself confidence. Think about it- when we feel shitty we often throw on slouchy, comfy, but usually unflattering clothes. Whether your someone who claims to not care about fashion or not- this is something that effects us all.

I have been wanting to write about style for a hot minute now- ever since I personally felt like I needed a major revamp. It most definitely has something to do with me nearing the end of my fav decade of my life thus far. I never really thought much about it to be honest, for the past 20 plus years I’ve always had a uniform ( for work ) and ever since moving to Hawaii- I feel like I’ve lived in my bikini or workout clothes. I never really had to get dressed for much, if you will, except going out with friends. More or less what I am trying to say is, I never really had to consistently put together outfits. I definitely don’t feel like I have built a capsule wardrobe, unless having pareos, swimsuits, rash guards, and various leggings or sports bras count.

I often felt/feel like I had nothing to wear- and my closet is bursting. I realized that for a good while now I have been copying and pasting what I think looks good on others to myself. I’m sure you can relate- we have all seen something on someone, ordered it, only to put it on and just not feel quite right. this was happening to me alot.

then Allison Bornstein came into my life. A tiktok viral stylist whose content I can’t quit consuming. If you follow me on Insta, then you have seen me reference this TikTok famous stylist - I shared a few of her videos a month or so ago..

Her 3 word method is something that I have been leaning heavily into. In case you missed it or can’t exactly remember lemme have the absolute pleasure to enlighten you- pick 3 words that describe your style.

  • First word is basically “what am I wearing all the time” what do these things have in common- think your regulars- the things you pull for the most.

  • Second word is a little more aspirational- look at your Pinterest or ppl you like on IG and what word would you use to describe those things? Polished? Classy? Edgy?

  • Third word is the emotional word-  how do you want to feel? How do you want to feel in your clothes? Powerful? Sexy? Comfortable? Elegant?

And if you have trouble with this, as I did, Allison suggests phoning a friend or asking your partner and have fun with it. “Ask them, what do you think my 3 words are- what words would you use to describe my style? Here’s the key” she says “you don’t want to get offended, you just sorta want to take in the information, and ask yourself what do I think about these words they chose for me? how do those words make me feel?”

The full video and explanation can be found here. There is also an exercise to do; where you pull out all “your regulars” in your closet and really dissect what it is that you’re always reaching for and why. It’s pretty interesting- dare I say style changing. What I found really cool is that I realized I do have my own personal style its just the formula I needed to follow to put the ‘fits together. And of course depending on the season you are in your words can change- and from time to time its good to tweak. As we do evolve.

My 3 words are oversized, sporty, effortless, and sexy- oops that’s four but hey its my life! I love oversized blazers, band T-shirts, paired with a biker short, a workout fit I can run errands in with an oversized button up to keep it effortlessly casual. When it comes to sexy- its more than just a fitted top but a feeling that even a certain shoe can give me. Lately I have been really loving the silk midi skirts with a sneaker- and I can’t stop obsessing over loafers. All in all I love a casual/effortless outfit that is versatile enough for the day time adventure on a layover to a fun happy hour without looking to too underdressed. Does that make sense?

These words aren’t a huge commitment- but when the look isn’t doing what you want, that’s when you can refer to your to your 3 words.. if one of you words is sexy and the other is oversized- then maybe a dress with an oversized blazer. or a cute bralette under an oversized tank..

3 word method, trousers, stying a white tshirt, CLYQUE the Lable

This outfit felt like it fulfilled all my words in one, effortless with the sunnies, oversized trousers, and the way this Tshirt felt and laid made me feel sexy .. the sweatshirt I was able to throw over really gave it a sporty vibe.

I loved this outfit, I had a blazer with me as well- not pictured.. but the simplicity of the dress and boots made me feel sexy and effortless

Allison also encourages creating a mood board- think Pinterest. Or even getting really nitty gritty with it and actually make a list of words then tally where you find the most common themes.

Using this method has really helped me not give into any given trend- I like to have fun with fashion but at one point I was just starting to hop on bandwagons. But what I really love is that Allison encourages you to shop your closet- what is it that you are always reaching for? How do you feel when you wear each piece.

I haven’t completely purged my closet yet but with my move on the horizon its inevitable. By purging I mean really getting rid of things that don’t fit, I don’t wear anymore, and simply do not serve me.  I think for my birthday in January I am going to treat myself to a personal styling session with Allison. Which she does via FaceTime.

More than anything what Allison has conveyed and I cannot agree more is that Fashion is Wellness.

“When you look good and feel confident in what you are wearing, it sorta permeates throughout your whole life.. when you are wearing an outfit that you really really like, you stand up straighter, you have better interactions with people.. you don’t have to have a full look everyday- it can be jeans and a T-shirt. Getting dressed in a way that feels good to you- I think is such an amazing tool for self expression, but general wellness”
