DETOXING Foods to add to your DIET TODAY
So you didn’t exactly
stay on the whole
“Dry January” tip..
Don’t beat yourself up over it. It’s been a pretty wild ride- I mean really. Yikes. Not to mention I had a birthday!! Turns out that you don’t just need to totally eliminate alcohol to feel better. In Fact if you can have a glass or 2 on the weekend ( or a bottle ) and keep it there- picture me clapping for you. If you find you need a drink in the middle of the week- have it. I am all for a good 10 day stretch but damn it really does help sometimes- in millennial terms “You do you bu”.
In the meantime, while you're in between chugging water and counting down to your next drink- I curated a list of foods I eat very regularly that happen to be detoxifying. And to be clear our bodies will get rid of what's bad usually on its own ( at this point in life- you're well aware of that fact).
A pretty magical thing - the human body.
But after any major event(s) or just a few days of drowning your sorrows- which at this point is very common- these foods listed below can be pretty good allies and honestly make you feel better.
All while you poop pink ( beets ). Keep reading babe- I got you.
Garlic- I cook with garlic so much- like maybe too much. The other night I felt like I would become a fire breathing dragon- it was pretty heavy. Long been known for its heart benefits, its antiviral, antibacterial and an antibiotic, and it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. An easy add and it’s in almost every recipe..
Beets! Yay- my fav. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I experienced this delicious root vegetable hot with butter ( *salivating* ) . Originally I had only consumed ice cold, in a cobb salad. Also another yummy way. I love these so much. This is the major player if you're specifically aimed at detoxing your liver. “Beets are a high-antioxidant vegetable that are also rich in nutrients. Beets contain betaine, which helps the liver rid itself of toxins, as well as a fiber called pectin that clears toxins that have been removed from the liver.” Honestly- I eat beets as often as possible. Also - the tops are good to steam and eat like spinach- the vegetable is the shiiii- yes it is and it makes you go pink - which is a nice switch up- lol.. Come on it was funny!
Broccoli- Okay this is a a little weird. For me. To have on this list- because up until recently I kinda hated broccoli. And most aren’t of fan because it can be a tad gassie- but once I started roasting it- GAME OVER. Obsessed. Which I know you are well aware of.. Anyway..helps your body fight off cancer-inducing chemicals, and boosts the liver’s ability to clear bad chemicals from our bodies. Ding ding- winnah winnah- happy to finally find my love for these little green trees.
Bananas - ice cold with a hot cup of coffee has been my latest craze with this well known fruit. Clearly off the top of your head you can think of 101 ways to eat one- and obvi the most common is to just peel it. I religiously ate bananas when I flew. No matter how “good” you’ve been with your food intake that day- if you're bloated- you’ll still beat yourself up for it. Luckily, fighting back against gas and water retention is one of the amazing things bananas do to your body. They increase bloat-fighting bacteria in the stomach and provide a healthy dose of potassium, which can help diminish water retention. I rest my case.
Sweet Potatoes- when I was doing research for this blog I was shocked to find these jewels on the list! I love love love sweet potatoes- and to be clear all varieties promote a healthy gut and brain. They can help fight cancer cells, help fight inflammation, they help remove mercury from your body, rich in fiber- ( which is good in gettin the bad out ) , and Anthocyanins in purple sweet potatoes are also associated with improving liver damage from alcohol abuse. So yeah - keep one handy. Dare I say year round?? I personally love to roast them and make homemade fries.. Mmm my fav..
KALE- I know spinach is good for you too, but I left that leafy wilted green alooong time ago for this rugged veggie. I like to say Kale is the new Spinach, at least in my kitchen. I kale it on the regular- ( catch that? lol ) with my eggs, mushrooms, I’ll throw it in a salad- its so durable and I just love it. Claimed the “superfood” of all greens- this baddie is packed with amino acids that help keep your mind sharp, kale is also beneficial for managing cholesterol. It can also help with managing blood pressure due to its high levels of magnesium and potassium, and in case your wondering - Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure to unhealthy levels.. So have a KALE smoothie or 2 after a rager.. or check out some of my recipes- which are super easy and delishhh.
Hope this was realistic- and helpful. It often seems like we have to go ALL OR NOTHING these days and everything is so extreme. Its taken me 36 years, but I think I am finding really good balance in my life. Something I am sure will be a continued work in progress…
thats why its good to you know feel like your always detoxing, by continuing to be good to yourself. It really is all the little habits that add up to this big moving ahhhmazing human body.
