How I lost my BOTOX VIRGINITY
Much like your “first time” for or of anything the mind sorta fantasizes of what it may be like. Like losing your virginity- for some it was a romantic moment on the beach and for others it was a very awkward uncomfortable - strange moment. Painful even. But I mean over time - it gets better. It should anyway…thats a whole other blog though.
I kinda felt this way about my BOTOX experience. For years I have had women light up whenever I have mentioned botox, like its this magical substance that they can’t wait to sell you on. Like when you’re wearing a dress, that you love, and someone says “OMG I love your dress”- and you answer “Got it on SALE for like $10 bucks at Target! And it has pockets!”.. Thats the sorta of reaction, I’m alluding to.
Being a flight attendant- its a very ahhhem “normal practice”. Most opting to get it anywhere they can- and the cheaper the better. I wasn’t exactly too hip on getting it (botox) for my first time in Korea or Australia- although both cultures seem to be doing something right.. Smooth skin and style are two words that would describe both. Then theres the whole “no flying” rule.. and though I have been a rule breaker in the past- I don’t like to fuck around when it comes to my face. Which is why when I finally decided to pull the trigger its surprising that I agreed to do it at a friends house instead of a plush clinic that I had pictured in my mind.
Another very common thing though is house calls of this sort and “Botox Parties” are actually a thing- if you haven’t bee invited to one.. It’s coming. TRUST. LOL. The older you get the more offers emerge. Anyway, there have been a lot of specials this Holiday Season at local clinics and I mentioned this to a girlfriend and she said her girl did it a bit cheaper.. And after a few testimonies of how amazing and professional she was- I was sold. To me- a solid recommendation from someone I trust is EVERYTHING. It speaks volumes.
If you know me- and have even gone out to eat with me- I like to ask questions. In general- I’m a curious gal. So it’s not like I just showed up held my girlfriend’s hand and hoped for the best ( shout out though to my girl Chloé for doing just that! ). I called and texted Emily- our beautiful sweet ahhmazing nurse practitioner- several times before actually even meeting her. I also inquired about her credentials. And to be frank, this was the best “medical procedure” or interaction with any practitioner/Dr- like ever. She made me feel so comfortable even when I was sweating and giggling nervously like a 5 year old little girl. She explained, and reexplained, and went over everything- extensively-
so no, it wasn’t like the plush office I had imagined. It was better. Plus I had a friend to hold my hand and help me document- like it was actually a dream set up.
Because I asked and you could be wondering as well here are Emilys Credentials :
Emily Brewer DNP, APRN-Rx, FNP-C
“I have been doing botox cosmetically and therapeutically for almost 5 years, beginning in January of 2016. My cosmetic training was through the American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE) and I have completed 2 of their Botulinum Toxins & Dermal Fillers courses, levels 1 and 2.”
Also I have seen the results and have heard countless testimonies. So I felt pretty COMF.
Emily consulting and thoroughly explaining why and where she would be injecting me with Botox, and why she will be giving me the least needed- “You can always put more in but you can’t take it out once its in” I really appreciated her conservative approach.
I have been wanting to do this for quite sometime. Like solidly for the past 4 years. For the most part I’m okay with getting older, I wear sunscreen religiously, my skin reggie is on point, I have trained myself to sleep on my back ( most nights ) and I bought a silk pillow case. But I just can’t shake these lines around my eyes, better known as “crows feet”. If I had a more of an olive or oily complexion, and not surfed at all in the last 10 years my skin could be in better shape by default.
Two things about that last sentence though- 1.) I won’t stop surfing 2.) You can’t fight genetics. So here I am. Not to mention since this last year, with the wearing of face masks, all I could see were those lines! So I needed to paralyze those fine lines- its been getting alil out of control.
I’m writing about this because I know I’m not the only one, and I feel like its important to share.
My personal experience was good. I did bruise ever so slightly, and I did feel a bit sore. I ended up icing myself just before bed and it put me right to sleep. I’m excited to see the results settle in here in the next week(s).. and my upper cheek area still feels a tad swollen & heavy as we went down a lil below the eye line because of how my smile muscles are… I read that this is all very normal. And duh I called Emily who also confirmed that.
But in the meantime
Below are some frequent asked questions- and some FACTS. I will also answer questions that were addressed on my latest Instagram post. Obviously everyone should do their own research before getting anything “done” but that’s just my opinion.
Does it hurt?
No, I was so nervous but honestly it didn’t hurt. I tend to get a lil woozy when it come to needles, I get this butterfly feeling in my tummy but actual pain? More like a small prick. And it is a tad uncomfortable. Immediately after your treatment, you may notice small red bumps. These will resolve in 20-30 minutes. But for the most part it doesn’t hurt.
I was sore that night and a little the next day. You can expect bruising, if you normally bruise. I had some bruising and soreness. But as women we bear children so honestly you can take it. I also got a slight headache.
*You May Get Some Redness, Bruising or Swelling or Even a Headache*
It is encourage to not drink 48 hours before or after, and not to take any medications like Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or Advil to help lower the chance of bruising. But like it was explained to me: “If you bruise easily then you’ll probably bruise.” Which was the case for me.
How do you find someone conservative?/ What did you say?
To me, nothing is better like a strong recommendation or testimonial from a friend. Or a friend of a friend. I don’t read reviews, I go by the results I have seen. Also I am a good judge of character, and I ask so many questions. I asked about workouts, drinking, surfing, all of it.. Emily was so extremely patient with me- I mean I’m putting a toxin in my face, willingly, if the person injecting it isn’t calm, and slow, and patient- and doesn’t use words like “to start” or “lets do a little now, you can always put more- not take away” then I’d keep looking. I knew Emily was my girl after her complete professionalism and thorough explanation- even if I did ask 5 times.
How long until I see results? And how long does it last?
In general, you can see the effects of Botox as early as 3 to 4 days after an injection. Dr. Oscar Trujillo, a facial plastic surgeon at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, says most patients will see results within 10 to 14 days but should wait the full 14 days to see the maximum results.
While the results vary based on factors such as the area treated and frequency of injection, Trujillo says results generally last 3 months.
In addition to the area treated and frequency of injection, the timeline of efficacy is also affected by the dose of Botox. According to Dr. Melanie Palm, a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, it appears that the higher the dose given in an area, the longer the effect on the muscles.

Is Botox safe while pregnant or breastfeeding?
NO.
How much does Botox cost?
Well, that all depends on where you live. But I did some research and found that typically it’s $10-$18 a unit- I’m sure places charge much more.. And it’s all relative and there’s a market for it. To be honest if Emily upped the price I’d probably pay it because I’m so incredibly comfortable with her and I trust her.
Can you start Botox in your 20s?
Honestly it really all depends on your skin, but I certainly wish I had. It’s been known to be preventive and legally you can start at 18. But again this is something that you could probably wait on til your in your 30s- all preference, but when you start to see wrinkles.. Thats probably a good time.
